Protagonist
The protagonist of the novel, Victor Frankenstein, was the man who created the monster. A main point of Gothic Literature is the loneliness of the protagonist. The reader travels with this person on their journey throughout the story. In a Gothic novel the protagonist is isolated and alone either physically or emotionally. This is evident in Frankenstein when Victor becomes alone when all of his family dies. In the case of Frankenstein, the antagonist is also very lonely. The monster which Victor created was desperately lonely and just wanted a companion. The result of his loneliness caused him to kill almost all of Victors family and friends. In Gothic Literature the protagonist is almost always lonely and struggling to find themselves, just like in the novel Frankenstein.
